Creative Direction and Design for an Independent Environmental Publication

Creative Director

Silica Magazine is your field guide to the anthropocene: reporting on the planet’s evolving landscapes through investigative journalism and interactive art. I helped co-found Silica in 2016 and have served as Creative Director across four annual issues, crafting its brand, campaigns, editorial art, interactives, and web and print platforms. Over the years, we've collaborated with dozens of talented artists, designers, musicians, technologists, and writers, crafting annual issues that combine disciplined reporting and cutting-edge experiences to reach a global audience.

We've done this by partnering with a variety of media, art and non-profit organizations, including Engadget (, The Institute for Queer Ecology (, Imprint Projects (, and The Institute for Interspecies Arts and Relations ( Silica's brand is raw, brutal, and playful — telling real stories on a planet of the unreal landscapes of the age of human impact.

Case Study

Issue 4: Dirt

Our latest issue "Dirt" was our biggest, richest, and most complex, collaborating early on in the planning process with our partners and working closely with our 20+ contributing journalists, illustrators, designers, artists, and musicians. In parallel with the development of the issue content, I refreshed the Silica brand, redesigned the website, and migrated our back issues onto a new modern CMS. The issue reached over half a million readers and was featured in places like Apple News and Longform.
